Step Into the World of Special Effects

This exciting 3-day SFX Bootcamp for Teens is designed for creative young minds who want to explore the fascinating world of film, TV, and theatre makeup. From bruises to blood, scars to character design—this course gives students aged 14–17 a safe, hands-on introduction to professional special effects techniques used on set.

Perfect for beginners, aspiring makeup artists, or those curious about a career in the screen industries, this experience blends practical learning, industry insight, and creative freedom—all taught by real SFX artists working in the business today.

What Your Teen Will Learn

Over three exciting days, students will explore the world of SFX makeup through industry-led demos, creative design, and hands-on artistry. Here’s what they’ll cover:

Day One – Intro to SFX & Wound Creation

• Discover what SFX artists do in film, TV and theatre through an engaging industry talk
• Get to grips with pro products like prosthetics, silicone, Bondos and Illustrator palettes
• Create realistic cuts, scrapes and fake blood effects—plus how to apply and remove them safely

 Day Two – Bruising, Black Eyes & Character Design

• Learn to layer colours and textures for lifelike bruises and black-eye effects
• Use face charts to sketch and plan a custom SFX character
• Master techniques like dirt placement and texture aging for believable on-set makeup

 Day Three – Final Build & Portfolio Work

• Bring your character to life with a full SFX transformation
• Capture your work with professional photos for your portfolio
• Present your final look, receive tutor feedback, and take away digital images of your creations

About The Central School of Make-Up

Founded in 2013, The Central School of Make-Up in Birmingham is one of the UK’s leading training academies for aspiring artists. Our tutors and guest lecturers work across fashion, editorial, film, and TV—with credits including London Fashion Week, BBC, and West End productions. Students learn in professional studios designed to reflect real industry environments.

Safety, Hygiene & Safeguarding

• All tutors are DBS-checked and hold valid First Aid certification
• Students will be required to be dropped off each morning by their parent/guardian
• Students will remain on-site at all times until collected by a guardian
• Comfort breaks and a 1-hour lunch break are built into each day
• Optional catered lunch available for £10 per day
• The building has 24/7 on-site security, coded access and monitored communal areas
• Full Safeguarding, Risk Assessments and Policies are available on request

Before the course begins, we kindly request that you complete our Parental Consent Form and submit the following:

• Emergency contact details
• Any medical or access requirements
• Details of learning support needs (if applicable)
• Drop-off/pick-up arrangements
