How to balance your day job and your new make-up career

Creating good life balance between a 9-5 job and your personal or family life is hard enough. Things get even more challenging when you throw a make-up career in to the mix! It’s often important to keep a day job for a while, either for cash flow or because it’s a job that you love and are good at. Regardless of the reason we have put together a few pointers to help you along the way, ensuring that your make-up career doesn’t suffer.

1. Work Hard

This may be too obvious to even mention but it really is the most imperative thing when embarking on a new career. Juggling 2 jobs requires lots of time, energy and dedication. For this reason it is so important to put 110% in to whatever it is that you’re doing, making sure that you get it right the first time round.

2. Time Management

If you’re anything like me, you already feel as if there aren’t enough hours in the day! Growing a side business will only amplify this feeling and add a new set of tasks to your to-do list. It is therefore so important to use your time wisely and optimise every precious hour in the day!
Try to plan your day in advance, setting time frames for each task. Then try and stick to the plan! There are some Apps, which can help you schedule your time if you struggle to work with a conventional diary.

3. Set Boundaries

You shouldn’t be working on your make-up career whilst you are at your day job and vice-versa (unless it’s lunch time of course). This means that however tempting it is to do so, you really shouldn’t be printing your Marketing material on the work printer or using the office phone to respond to enquiries! For your own sanity try and compartmentalise your two roles, keep your business cards separate and if you’re setting up your make-up business from home, try and keep your day job to a separate office if possible.

4. Prioritise

Decide what needs to be done immediately and what can wait. Start each day with a to-do list and have two categories for things that have to be done that day and another for things that you would like to get done that day. Do as many as you can from the second category if time allows. Be willing to adapt, your list may (and most probably will) need altering and reorganising throughout the day. Use a calendar or spreadsheet to mark deadlines so that nothing creeps up on you.

5. Full Disclosure

Make your management aware that you are actively pursuing a career in the Make-up industry. Juggling two careers can be tricky, particularly if you work within a similar industry, you might be seen as the competition! By being completely transparent with your employers will hopefully allow you the opportunity to grow your make-up career, let your colleagues know about your services if management allows. It could be a fantastic platform to network.

6. Make time to relax

If you’re going to work hard you need to make sure that you play hard too! It’s important that you make time for yourself, whatever it is that makes you relax, Netflix marathon, night out with the girls, going to the gym, having a muddy walk with the kids or the dog, you need that little break! Taking a step back from the relentlessness of work lets you clear your mind so that you’ll be more focused and motivated when you return.

You don’t always need to choose between the two, if you keep these simplistic things in mind your career can flourish!
